Behind “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”

Feature Photo by Kim Hymes Photography

You’ve heard the old rhetoric, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” but what does it mean? Let’s dive in. This proverb stems from English folklore and offers a recipe many couples believe to be the precursor to a successful marriage. The rhyme outlines four items you must carry or incorporate into your wedding day for good luck.

While the tradition behind the rhyme has evolved, many nearlyweds still choose to incorporate these four elements into their weddings to honor tradition and bring good luck to their marriages.

Something Old

“Something old” represents continuity and a connection to the marrier’s past. By incorporating something old into their wedding attire, the marrier acknowledges and honors their heritage, family and the life they are leaving behind as they enter a new phase of life.

Examples:

  • Heirloom Jewelry
  • Ceremony Readings
  • Family Photographs
  • Antique Getaway Car
  • Historic Venue
  • Vintage Dishes

Something New

“Something new” symbolizes optimism, hope and the couple’s future. It’s a token of good fortune for the newlyweds as they embark on their journey together. The “something new” is often seen as a representation of the couple’s new life and the prosperity that comes with it.

Examples:

  • Bridal Gown
  • Shoes
  • New Initials/Monogram
  • Perfume/Cologne
  • Hair Accessories

Something Borrowed

The tradition of “something borrowed” involves borrowing an item from a happily married couple, with the belief that the couple’s good fortune will be passed on to the new marriage. It’s a great way to incorporate the support and love of friends and family into the marriage.

Examples:

  • Fashion Accessories
  • Family Handkerchief
  • Cake/Sweets Recipe
  • Parents’ First Dance Song
  • Fabric from a Relative’s Gown
  • Bouquet Lockets

Something Blue

Blue has been associated with weddings for centuries, traditionally representing fidelity, love and good luck. Wearing blue is thought to bring these qualities to the marriage and help ensure a lasting and faithful union.

Examples:

  • Bridesmaids Dresses
  • Getting-Ready Pajamas
  • Sapphire Jewelry
  • Garter
  • Nail Polish
  • Blue Thread Embroidery
