Wedding Flowers 101

FEATURED PHOTO BY Kristen Thomison | FEATURED PHOTO FLORALS BY Fox & Fern

Florals have a way of transforming a wedding from lovely to downright jaw-dropping. Whether they’re framing your walk down the aisle or accenting the tablescapes guests admire over dinner, florals bring texture and emotion into every corner of your celebration. It’s safe to say they do some serious heavy lifting when it comes to setting the tone. So, when flowers are one of the most photographed parts of your day, where do you even begin?

If your only floral experience involves grabbing a plastic-wrapped bouquet at the entrance of Trader Joe’s or sending sympathy arrangements, you’re not alone. Planning wedding flowers is an entirely different game, but with a little prep and the right florist, you’ll soon be dreaming in dahlias and hydrangeas. Let’s break it down step by step. (more…)

FOR THE LOVE OF LAMBETH

Opulent and joyful, the ornate piping of yesteryear has reemerged with Lambeth cakes. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY BY Audrey McCloud, Audrey Grace Photo

Picture this: you and your spouse are celebrating your 20th wedding anniversary. You’ve reached this iconic marriage milestone; maybe you even planned a special trip. As you reminisce about your wedding day, you decide to pull up your photos…and suddenly you’re rummaging through drawers searching for that old hard drive or long-forgotten thumb drive. Maybe you attempt to power up your 20-year-old iPhone. Or you dig through email archives trying to find the link to the online gallery your photographer once sent. Is cloud storage even still around? Do you still have the computer your photos were downloaded to? Feel that little rush of panic?

A Wedding Cake Flower Safety Guide — with Shannon Turner Cakes

WRITTEN BY Shannon Turner, Shannon Turner Cakes | FEATURED PHOTO BY Tags Photography

It’s 11 p.m. and you’re scrolling through Pinterest, building your dream wedding board. You’ve found it: the perfect cake adorned with blush peonies, garden roses straight out of a Cotswolds cottage garden and delicate lily of the valley cascading down three tiers. The vision is stunning. You can already see it at your reception! But here’s what most couples scrolling at night don’t know: lily of the valley is genuinely dangerous. Not just mild stomach-ache dangerous; we’re talking cardiac glycosides that can affect heart function. And it’s far from the only gorgeous wedding flower that should never come into contact with a cake.

The stakes aren’t small. Guest safety is paramount, and the last thing anyone wants is a medical emergency at their reception (though serious reactions are uncommon with proper handling and the right precautions). The good news is that fresh flowers can absolutely be used safely on wedding cakes when you work with knowledgeable professionals and understand the basics yourself. (more…)
