Sara & Sherveen’s Persian Wedding at Atlanta History Center

Sara and Sherveen, both hailing from large Persian families, envisioned a wedding that would honor their rich cultural heritage. On a beautiful spring day, they brought this vision to life with an enchanting garden wedding at the iconic Atlanta History Center. From the ornate sofreh aghd to the lavish reception dining setup, every element was a testament to the richness of Persian traditions.

Living and working as medical doctors in Seattle, WA, Sara and Sherveen faced the challenge of planning their wedding from afar. They first met in the hallways of Emory Hospital during their medical training, making Atlanta—Sara’s hometown and the city where their love story began—the perfect location for their nuptials. They chose the lush gardens and expansive layout of the Atlanta History Center for its ability to create a memorable experience for all.

Guests arrived in black-tie attire and were welcomed into the romantic garden at the Swan House. To combat the expected heat, the couple provided guests with refreshing popsicles from Mocha Pops, including a unique Faloodeh flavor—a traditional Persian sweetened rice dessert—which was a hit among the attendees.

The cascading fountain and stately stairs of the Swan House served as a stunning backdrop for Sara and Sherveen’s ceremony. The sofreh, beautifully arranged by Sofreh Aghd Atlas, featured lush pink and cream florals, crystal candelabras and silver accents. Blending modern and traditional Persian elements, the couple began by standing at the altar to read their vows, then moved to the sofreh for the traditional sugar-grinding ceremony, and finally exchanged rings, dipping their fingers in honey to symbolize the sweetness of marriage.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed an outdoor cocktail hour on the other side of the Swan House. A live violinist serenaded them with a mix of Persian and classical music as they savored saffron-spiced chicken skewers and other appetizers, accompanied by a full premium bar.

The reception took place in the Grand Overlook Ballroom, elegantly draped in white and adorned with elevated crystal floral arrangements and gold accents, courtesy of Flowers by Yona. Sara and Sherveen made a grand entrance, dancing to the traditional Persian wedding song “Mobarak Bad,” and soon had their guests joining in the celebration.

During the cake-cutting, Sara’s dance group surprised everyone with a choreographed knife dance. In keeping with tradition, Sherveen attempted to bribe the dancers with cash to get the knife, adding a playful and memorable touch to the evening. For Sara, this was the highlight of the wedding, as it allowed her dance group to play a special role in the festivities.

As the couple strolled through Olguita’s Garden for sunset photos, the celebration continued with a lively drummer and high-energy DJ sets, ensuring that the dance floor remained packed well into the night. The evening ended as a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments.
