Finding “the dress” is often at the top of every nearlywed’s to-do list, but it can also feel like one of the most daunting tasks to tackle. With a little preparation and the right mindset, however, dress shopping can become one of the most enjoyable, memory-making experiences all on its own. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your dress shopping day!
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT
Wedding gown shopping isn’t the time for a drop-in. Most reputable bridal salons require appointments, and this is for your benefit! By booking ahead and completing any pre-appointment questionnaires, your stylist will have time to get familiar with your wedding details and pull gowns tailored to your style and vision.
SET YOUR BUDGET
Establish a budget … even if your budget is “no budget.” Remember to account for accessories, alterations and specialty undergarments. Sticking to a budget narrows your options and helps you choose salons that align with your price range.
BRING PROPER UNDERGARMENTS
Whether or not shapewear is part of your plan for the big day, bring what makes you feel your most confident to your appointment. Many crepe or fitted gowns look their best with seamless undergarments, and nude or skin-tone options are a must to avoid distracting patterns showing through delicate fabrics. We all have good imaginations, but it’s all about minimizing the guesswork and focusing on how the dress truly looks and feels – without pretending you can’t see the bright undies showing through!
INVITE THE RIGHT CREW
While it’s tempting to bring a large entourage, too many opinions can overwhelm you and affect the mood of the appointment. Think carefully about whose input matters most and keep your group small and VIP-only.
DOCUMENT THE DAY
Snap photos and jot down notes during your appointments to keep track of what you’ve tried on. Your facial expressions in those photos can reveal so much about how you truly feel in each gown! These notes will also make it easier to narrow down your favorites later.
PLAN FOR ALTERATIONS
Almost every wedding dress will need alterations. Start the process about 3-4 months before your wedding date to ensure everything is tailored to perfection.
PERMISSION TO SAY “YES”
Go into your appointment with an open mind. Your gown should feel authentically you. A gown can check every box on your must-have list, but if you don’t love it, then it’s not the dress. Another gown could be completely different from anything you thought you wanted, but if it feels right, then you’ve found your “the one.”
RELAX AND ENJOY!
Your wedding gown will be a reflection of who you are. When you find her, you’ll know. Enjoy the process and happy shopping!
