How to Get a Marriage License in Tennessee

Though the steps and requirements needed to get a marriage license might feel overwhelming, it’s actually fairly simple. Here’s an overview of what you need to know, but keep in mind that, depending on which county you get married in, there might be some different requirements, so check with the county clerk beforehand.

Who May Apply?

Unmarried people who are 18 years old. For those under 18, check with your county clerk’s office for information about restrictions and requirements.

What to Provide?

Proof of date of birth (a government issue photo ID suffices in most counties; but a birth certificate may be required, so check with your county). Some counties, such as Davidson, also require proof of social security number and both parties must be present when applying for the license.

Cost

The cost fluctuates depending on the county. In many counties, the license is $97.50, which will be reduced to $37.50 if the couple has undergone at least four hours of premarital counseling by a qualified instructor. However, in Davidson County, the license is $99.50 and will be reduced to $60 if they’ve done a premarital counseling course.

Waiting Period/Expiration of License

There is no waiting period. The license expires after 30 days.
